Converting audio tapes to MP3

Many schools have large stocks of audio cassette tapes with recordings of curriculum materials. How can these be converted into MP3 or other digital audio formats? Here’s one way:

  1. Download Audacity free from http://audacity.sourceforge.net/, (for Windows, Mac or Linux)
  2. Connect your tape recorder Line Out to the Line In socket on the computer (note you’ll probably need a desktop computer because most portables don’t have Line In - only a Mic input)
  3. Tell Audacity to record from the Line In instead of the microphone.
  4. Record direct from the tape recorder to Audacity,
  5. Edit and then save the audio as MP3 files.
  6. copy into the iTunes library and/or to your MP3 player.

Note that you’ll need the LAME MP3 encloder to save the audio as MP3. http://audacity.sourceforge.net/help/faq?s=install&i=lame-mp3
